Design Movement: Influence/ Impact
The De Stijl movement was influenced by Cubists paintings and DaDa movement in which the ideas about the ideal geometric forms like the “perfect straight line”. De Stijl works influenced the Bauhaus style and the international style of architecture along with clothing and interior design.
This movement’s influence in architecture can be seen most in the Rietveld Schröder House; which is the only building to have been created solely using the principles of De Stijl. The outside of the house is very much in the De Stijl style with white and grey walls, black doorframes and many strong elements painted in primary colors.
More recently, this movement has inspired the modern and ambiguous idea of “color blocking”. This style, even though it came from the De Stijl principles, does not focus merely on straight vertical or horizontal lines and also uses any color available, not just the traditional primary colors of the original movement.
